A few months ago, I thought about creating a free online ‘magazine’ for ancient coins. Something any ancient coin collector might enjoy, beginner or experienced. And so, I asked a few friends whether they’d be willing to write articles for it and here we are. This first issue has five articles about all sorts of topics, from Greek fractions to Wuzhu coinage in Imperial China. There’s even one about modern coins if you’re not so interested in Classical numismatics. You can access it by clicking on the link here, but I’ve included some questions and answers if you’d like to learn more.
When will the next one come out?
I’m unsure how regularly regularly this magazine be published, but I’m thinking bi-annual. That means the next issue will likely be released in ~6 months’ time.
What does the title mean?
“Γλαῦκες” is ancient Greek for ‘little owls’ and was used to refer to the silver Tetradrachms of Athens, which feature such an animal on the reverse. They’re probably the most iconic ancient coin, and I’d recommend any collector get one for their collection, perhaps we’ll even have an article about them in the next issue…
Can I write something?
Of course! If you’d like to have your article published in the magazine, please email me at ancientnumisuk@gmail.com with a rough idea of a topic that interests you (even if there’s a relatively loose link to numismatics), and I’ll send you some more details.
Will you post more on Substack?
Yes! Sorry about the lack of posts recently, but I plan on writing more again soon. Perhaps not weekly, but I’ll try my best to give regular updates, even if it’s just sharing a new YouTube video (which, by the way, we just hit 1,000 subscribers on! 🥳).
My thanks to everyone who contributed to this issue.
