If you just can’t get enough of ancient and medieval history, this is for you. Here are 5 writers, in no particular order, that I subscribe to and love reading. And I’m sure you will too.
‘A Reading From Homer’ - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1885

Bronze Age History
This Substack doesn’t post very often, but it’s well worth the wait. Articles are long, extremely well researched and thus full of information, but also enjoyable to read. In my opinion, Ancient History Papyruswriting doesn’t get the attention it deserves for all its great content.
Ancient Mysteries
You can expect weekly posts from Ancient Origins UNLEASHED, the second most popular history Substack. These look at a diverse range of topics, but work very well at provoking curiosity. And you don’t even have to love ancient history to find these interesting - here are a few recent titles:
When Did Humans First Inhabit the Americas?
10 Bizarre Relics from History
What Happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island?
“Bring Ancient Wisdom to your Modern Mind”
Classical wisdom strives to explore all aspects of the classical world, and enables us to apply what we learn to the world today. This is something I’m sure any reader will get a lot of value from, the only downside: the number of posts are limited by whether you pay for a subscription. Nonetheless, there are plenty of great free posts, and it’s well worth checking out.
Medieval History
If you’re interested in the middle ages, History, Etc is perfect for you. Great weekly content I’ve learnt a lot from - and much of it will be of interest to a wider audience too. There is a paid subscription option, but you’ll be able to access about half of the posts for free.
Classical Literature
Nusky’s Classics Corner is awesome. You never quite know what to expect: book reviews, thought-provoking essays and even songs translated into Latin! This Substack has been going for two years now, and I’m so glad I found it.
I hope that you found this post helpful. If you did, please consider sharing it. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the kind words.
