Who are you?
I’m AncientNumis, and I’m absolutely fascinated by ancient coins. I’ve been collecting for a few years now, and I’d love to share my passion of classical numismatics with whoever’s interested.
How often will you post?
Initially, I aimed to post once every week or two, but that’s proved difficult. Sometimes I write a few articles in a short period of time, and others I’m too busy for a while. Sorry! 😅
What will you post?
Anything to do with ancient coins that I find interesting: stories about certain coins, thoughts on the hobby, reports of new finds and much much more. I’ll try to include some polls in posts too, so you can pick what you want me to write about next.
Where else can find you?
I have a youtube channel called AncientNumis, and originally had a different website. I’ll probably be more active here, though.
Why care about ancient coins?
Ancient coins are awesome! They’re little pieces of the past that we can experience and learn from. Take, for example, my favourite ancient coin: the Athenian tetradrachm. These have to be the most famous coins of all antiquity, and many collectors love them. The majority of these were minted in Athens in the second half of the 5th century BC, and helped to fund projects like the Parthenon. It’s amazing to hold these and imagine what that little owl has seen!
Athens AR Tetradrachm, Circa 454-404 BC. Featuring the goddess Athena and an owl, The Athenian tetradrachm is perhaps the most famous ancient coin, and a popular choice for collectors.
Awesome stuff! I wrote about a very specific Japanese coin collection recently! https://hiddenjapan.substack.com/p/500-yen-commemoration
